HOW TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR WATER HEATER

make your water heater last longer, perform annual tank flushes to remove sediment, check and replace the sacrificial anode rod every few years, lower the thermostat to 120°F to reduce corrosion, and install a water softener if you have hard water, plus consider professional annual checkups for gas lines and connections

Maintenance Tasks

Insulate Tank & Pipes: Insulate the tank and hot water pipes to reduce heat loss, making the unit more efficient

Flush the Tank Annually: Drain a few gallons of water from the drain valve to remove mineral buildup, which makes the heater work harder; do this every 6 months if you have hard water.

Replace the Anode Rod: This rod attracts corrosive minerals; check it every 2-3 years and replace it when it’s heavily coated to prevent tank corrosion.

Adjust the Thermostat: Set the temperature to 120°F (not the default 140°F) to save energy and slow mineral buildup.

Test the Pressure Relief Valve: Inspect this safety valve regularly to ensure it’s working and not leaking; call a pro if unsure.
